Lauren Davidson is a Meanjin (Brisbane) based artist who works in a saturated palette to showcase the beauty and magic of our natural world. Their practice is playful and intricate, drawing on symbolic traditions such as witchcraft and the language of flowers. These whimsical elements are grounded by somber and timely themes: extinction crises, mythology of the self, and the conflict between our inner and outer worlds.
Davidson began serious practice in 2020, as a way to give back to their community in the wake of the Black Summer Bushfires by offering portrait commissions in exchange for donations to wildlife charities. To this day, Davidson continues to weave community service and activism into their art and practice model.
In support of their art practice, the artist has completed a diploma in Creative Therapies, exploring the use of different creative practices for therapeutic benefit. This study included visual art therapies, sand therapy, dance and movement therapy, music therapy, play-based therapy and more.
Davidson works primarily with vibrant acrylics on thick archival card. Self-taught, their practice is rooted in an experimental curiosity and passion for vibrant and semi-surreal colour choices. With years of experience rendering custom portraits in their signature style, Davidson is branching out to focus on new original projects.
